Composite or Wood ?
Great strides have taken place in the composite oar
industry and we have been a big part of that change. We have experimented with many
different oar manufacturers and oars in fiberglass, exotic materials and aluminum. What we
found was that most of them weren't up to our high quality standards. We worked with
Sawyer Paddles and Oars for almost a year developing our all new composite oars. These
oars blow away the competition. Our oars are 100% composite, have removable blades, foam
grips, are rope wrapped and stopped and come with our exclusive anodized aluminum
oarlocks. One of the fastest growing options for all of you with SUV's is the breakdown
option. This allows you to cut the oar size in half for transport. There is absolutely no
slop in the joint and the weight difference between one and two piece oars is nil. The
nice feature is the ability to put your oars in the back of the vehicle, or in a trunk. No
more trying to find a spot long enough for them. We are huge fans of composite oars
for a few reasons. One, the flex is terrific. At the start of your stroke is when there is
the greatest pressure on the oar shaft. The composite oar flexes the most at that point as
well. Them during the first 1/2 of the stroke making your stroke more even. The other nice
thing about composite oars is the same as comparing wood prams to fiberglass prams. If you
drop your composite oar on the ground you don't even give it a second thought. Wood oars
you look at and repair (if your smart) any dings. Just a bit more maintenance. Our goal is
to have you fishing not fixing as much as possible.
In wood oars we carry the Smoker laminated fir
oars made in Talent, Oregon exclusively for one very simple reason. Smoker
oars are the best oars wood available today......period! The building process is all by
hand including a 5 step finishing process including both oils and lacquers for deep and
lasting wood protection. Smoker oars come black rope wrapped,
rubber stops and oarlocks. Both composite and wood oars are available in 6 1/2 for
the Stillwater Classic with oval oarlocks and 7 with whitewater oarlocks for the
Hoppers.
